HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu police officers have arrested two Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) sailors for trespassing and theft at Haiku Stairs.
The two were allegedly seen throwing a metal railing over the side of the stairs.
HPD added that the pair were part of a larger group who were hiking the trail illegally and they expect to arrest more people.
Officials from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service were notified immediately and are taking action to make arrangements for the two 2nd Class Petty Officers involved.
“Thank you to the members of the public, Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam and Naval Criminal Investigative Service for assisting,” HPD said in a social media post.
PHNSY & IMF said the commanding officer has the right to administer punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, from formal admonishment to separation from the service.
“PHNSY & IMF cares deeply about the environment of Hawaii and is committed to transparency in our operations and behavior of all 6,500 employees, including Sailors and civilians. The actions portrayed in the videos and photos depicting trespassing at Haʻikū Stairs does not represent the PHNSY & IMF Core Values of Honor, Courage, Commitment and Aloha,” PHNSY & IMF said in a statement.
Officials remind the public that it is illegal for unauthorized persons to access Haiku Stairs and violators seen partaking in the hike will be cited or arrested.
“No trespassing” signs were also posted. “Do not risk your safety or the safety of others,” HPD added.
