The University of Hawai‘i women’s basketball team carries an 11-game winning streak—the longest active run in the Big West—into a key conference road matchup against Long Beach State on Thursday.
Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. HST at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California.
The Rainbow Wahine (11-0 Big West) last won 11 straight games during a 15-game streak in the 2014-15 season. Their current run marks the 10th double-digit win streak in program history.
Entering the week, UH was one of just 15 teams nationwide with an active streak of 11 or more consecutive victories.
Hawai‘i has built its success on defense, ranking first in the Big West and fifth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 52.7 points per game. The ‘Bows also rank second in the conference and fourth in the nation in field-goal percentage defense (33.5%) while holding opponents to 26.5% from beyond the arc, good for 20th nationally.
UH has held eight of its last 10 opponents under 50 points, including a program-record six straight sub-50 performances from Jan. 9-25. The ‘Bows have limited 19 opponents to under 40% shooting—including eight under 30%—and hold a 17-2 record in those contests.
Senior guard Lily Wahinekapu leads UH with 10.8 points per game, 60 assists, and 29 steals. She enters Thursday’s game sitting on 999 career points at Hawai‘i, with her next bucket making her the 25th member of the program’s 1,000-point club. Including her freshman season at Cal State Fullerton (2021-22), Wahinekapu has totaled 1,426 career points.
Mia ‘Uhila has provided a spark in her last five starts, highlighted by a career-high 23-point performance against UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 8, including 15 points in the third quarter alone. She shot 63.2% (12 of 19) from the field in last week’s wins over Cal Poly and UCSB.
With Wahinekapu sidelined against Cal Poly due to illness, younger sister Jovi Lefotu stepped up with a career-high 15 points, shooting 4-of-5 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
MeiLani McBee is closing in on a program milestone, entering Thursday’s game with 194 career 3-pointers—just 11 shy of breaking Amy Atwell’s school record. The senior has played in 131 career games, including 114 consecutive appearances, surpassing Atwell as UH’s all-time leader in games played on Jan. 25 against UC Irvine.
Following Thursday’s matchup, Hawai‘i will travel to Irvine for a showdown with UC Irvine on Saturday at the Bren Events Center.
