Unstable material causes full closure of Kalaniana’ole Hwy Monday night

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Drivers in Honolulu should plan for a full closure of Kalaniana‘ole Highway (Route 72) between Lunalilo Home Road and Kealahou Street on Monday night, February 24.

The closure will begin at 8 p.m. and last until 5 a.m. Tuesday, February 25, as crews work to remove approximately 100 cubic yards of unstable material from the slope above the highway.

Electronic signs have been posted to alert drivers, and the Lanai Lookout and Halona Lookout will also be closed during this time.

Motorists will be directed to use a detour route through Kealahou Street, Hawaii Kai Drive, and Lunalilo Home Road.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) will provide updates via social media if the work is completed earlier than expected.
