That may seem like ages ago, but the space is finally been turned over and reinvented into the new location of Re-Use Hawaii and their redistribution center.

Marketing and Communications Manager Vanessa Ablola joined KHON2 to explain their grand opening weekend, following their December soft opening.

During the grand opening, guests can expect a pop-up market featuring local bakeries, coffee vendors and businesses that emphasize sustainability.

Executive Director Quinn Vittum also joined KHON2 to share the great success Re-Use Hawaii has bade since its soft opening.

“We already had a huge following when we were in Kakaako, so folks came to check us out here. We are more centrally located off of Salt Lake Blvd, so easier to get to from Windward, west side and even North Shore, so it has been great for everybody. We also have a lot of projects happening where we are bringing in more material, some from hotel projects where the TVs are from, so it’s just great resources for the community,” shared Vittum.

Vittum added that the non-profit’s mission is to divert waste from the landfill and provide it to the community as an affordable resource.

“As an island community, we have got a pretty huge responsibility to everything we can to minimize the need for landfills. That has been in the news, too. So, we have our deconstruction program that is really impactful, kind of redesign how demolition works. Instead of smashing buildings down, we come in, deconstruct them by hand to save all the material for reuse and recycling. A standard house that we deconstruct, we can save 70% of the overall volume of the building. Doors, windows, plumbing and electrical fixtures all come back here and people can shop for it and pay a fraction of the cost of what it would be if you bought it at a hardware store. I think our big call to action for everyone right now is come down and see our new redistribution center, that is what we call our store here. See if there is something that you can use at your place, even if you’re a business. We have lots of desks and all kinds of material that we are just trying to get redistributed back into the community.”

You won’t want to miss the grand opening of Re-Use Hawaii as it will be a day of fun and very affordable things you may need.

The grand opening will be held at Stadium Marketplace on Saturday, March 1 starting at 9 a.m. More information can be found on their website.
