HONOLULU (KHON2) — U.S. Geological Society experts predict Kilauea could erupt again within the next two to four days.
While there may not be any lava, plenty of gas coming from the vents is leading to hazy skies across the islands. Health officials are warning everyone to be careful for the next few days.
It was a picture perfect day in Waikiki.
“Feels like it heals the bones, especially coming from Canada, it’s a nice, really nice break,” said Dale Forbes, visitor from Canada.
Even though it’s sunny right now, health officials warn both visitors and locals about elevated levels of vog, volcanic smog, in the air from the latest eruptions at Kilauea.
“People that have asthma, people that have chronic lung disorders, they tend to get exacerbations or triggering their lung disorder which causes them to have shortness of breath, coughing, which sometimes can lead to infections and other problems,” said Dr. Tony Trpovski, Doctors of Waikiki.
“I’ve had asthma for about 30 years now and it does come up every now and then without any reason or explanation, sometimes some sort of an allergy,” said Alan Redburn, visitor from Canada. “And this is the first time I heard of fog, vog and stuff like that, so I’m gonna be really aware of it now that I know volcanoes are erupting.”
Health officials said the most sensitive groups are children, kupuna and those with respiratory conditions.
They added that face masks do not protect against vog, but do help you from inhaling volcanic ash. If you have an inhaler to treat asthma, doctors recommend having it on standby.
“And then if you get in trouble, go see our doctor,” said Trpovski. “Go see your doctor, have him put you on a nebulizer, change your medicines around, but we will see an uptick in respiratory problems in the coming few weeks.”
Some other tips include:
- Stay inside if you need to and close windows and doors. If you’re using an air conditioner, set it to recirculate.
- Don’t smoke. Stay away from second-hand smoke.
- Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
“We’re not go, go, go, we just wanna take it easy and do a few little sights here and there and enjoy it while we can,” said Forbes.
“Coming from the cold weather in Canada, we find we’re very, very far ahead, just standing right here on the beach to look around,” said Redburn.
