Windward showers ramping up this weekend

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Trade winds returned to the islands in a big way to start the month of March. Wind speeds are approaching 30 mph sustained with gusts to 50 mph. These wind speeds are expected through at least Wednesday. Trade winds will pushing in light to moderate showers primarily over windward locales especially during the night and early morning hours.

Tonight and Friday morning:

  • A wet band is coming, bringing more showers to windward and mauka areas.
  • These showers will be short-lived, but some could be heavy.
  • A few showers might reach leeward areas.

Weekend:

  • Winds will get stronger with gusts to 50 mph.
  • By Sunday, it will be very windy, especially in Maui County and the Big Island.

Next week:

  • Strong winds will continue.
  • It will also get wetter, especially early in the week.
