Big Island officer named Aloha Exchange Club Officer of the Year

HAWAII, Hawaii (KHON2) — Big Island Police Officer Rodney DeLima was awarded the title of Aloha Exchange Club Officer of the Year for his work in the apprehension of multiple armed and dangerous fugitives during December of last year.

On Dec. 5, 2024, Officer DeLima was able to locate a stolen vehicle, where he found a shotgun and a woman sleeping in the vehicle. The woman was arrested without incident and was identified as the girlfriend of an armed and dangerous wanted fugitive.

Given that information, DeLima and other personnel were able to locate the fugitive and arrest him, ending a months-long manhunt.

The following day, DeLima and another officer were able to locate and identify another wanted fugitive, who was also considered armed and dangerous. The suspect drove off, attempting to evade the officers, and struck a nearby tree, overturning his vehicle.

DeLima and the other officer were able to then arrest the suspect. The two suspects apprehended as a result of these cases faced over 38 charges combined, including auto theft, criminal property damage, burglary and more.
