Strong trade winds through Thursday

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Strong trade winds are expected through Thursday. Wind speeds may approach 30 mph sustained with gusts to 50 mph. Wind advisories are in place for portions of Maui County and Hawaii Island. By this weekend, kona winds return to replace the trades with additional showers through early next week.

Now through Friday:

  • Strong winds will hit Maui and the Big Island through Wednesday morning, possibly reaching advisory levels.
  • Winds will remain strong but slightly weaker on Wednesday.
  • Winds will decrease Thursday, with a bigger drop by Friday and the weekend.

Weekend and Beyond:

  • Winds will become lighter by the weekend.
  • A low-pressure system near the islands could bring rain, especially to western islands and the Big Island’s southeast side.
  • Rain amounts depend on the low’s exact location.
  • Unsettled weather could last into early next week.
