“Hey everyone! So, I’ve been meaning to write about this awesome place I love hanging out at in Waikiki. It’s called Hulas Bar & Lei Stand. If you’re into a chill atmosphere with great drinks and even better company, this is your spot. It’s right by Diamond Head with killer views of Waikiki Beach. I mean, who wouldn’t want to sip a cocktail while looking at that? I’ve been going there for a while now, and it’s always a blast—especially during happy hour when we try crazy cocktails with pineapple and coconut flavors, total island vibes. One time, the bartender was telling us stories about famous people who have visited Hulas over the years, and it was so cool hearing those tales….”
A 24yr old traveller’s Take on Hula’s Bar & Lei Stand (Honolulu)
By Jake, 24, (He/Him) Vers. taken but traveling alone- First-Time Visitor to Waikiki
So, I just got back from my first night at Hula’s Bar & Lei Stand in Waikiki, and holy crap, this place is a vibe! I’m 24, traveling solo for a week in Hawaii, and I wasn’t sure what to expect when I heard about this spot. I mean, it’s billed as this iconic gay bar with 50 years of history, but let me tell you—it’s so much more than a label. It’s like the ultimate chill hangout that somehow turns into a party without even trying.
I rolled up around 6 PM on a Friday, right as the sun was dipping on the Pacific making Diamond Head change color 3 times! (which, by the way, you can see perfectly from the open-air balcony—insane view). The place is on the second floor of the Waikiki Grand Hotel, super easy to find once you figure out the lobby entrance. I grabbed a Mai Tai—dude, they don’t mess around with the rum—and posted up by the railing to watch the waves and the zoo across the street. The breeze was perfect, the drink was strong, and the crowd was this awesome mix of locals and tourists just soaking in the Aloha spirit.
By 9 PM, the energy shifted. The kitchen was closing up (pro tip: get the Kahlua pork sliders before 9—they’re unreal), and the video DJ started spinning some absolute bangers. I’m not even a big dancer, but I couldn’t help moving a little when they dropped some throwback pop remixes. The crowd got livelier—guys my age, some older folks, couples, solo travelers like me—all just vibing together. It’s 21+ only, so it felt grown-up but not stuffy, you know? I ended up chatting with this local guy, Kai, who told me about the Saturday catamaran cruise they do. Apparently, it’s a blast—booze, ocean, and a swimsuit afterparty back at the bar. I’m sold.
The staff? Total legends. The bartender, Matt (Str8 but chill & HT!), hooked me up with a Blue Hawaiian when I asked for something tropical, and he was cracking jokes the whole time. It’s that kind of place where you feel welcome right away, no pretension. I stayed till like 1 AM—bar’s open till 2—and honestly, I could’ve kept going. Hula’s isn’t just a bar; it’s like a little slice of Hawaii’s soul. I’m already planning to hit it again this week—maybe Sunday for this month’s “Mary’s & Mimosas!”
or again next Saturday for that catamaran. If you’re in Waikiki, don’t sleep on this spot. It’s the real deal.

Best Times to Visit During Your One-Week Stay
Since you’re on the island for a week (let’s assume a typical Saturday-to-Saturday trip, starting April 12–19, 2025, for context), here’s a breakdown of the best times to hit Hula’s —Think good vibes, social scenes, and unique experiences. Hawaii’s weather in April is warm and pleasant (highs around 80°F, lows around 70°F), with minimal rain, making any day a solid bet.
- Saturday (Arrival Day, April 12): Kick off your trip with the Hula’s Catamaran Cruise (usually departs around 3 PM, returns by 5 PM). It’s a 90-minute sail with drinks, ocean views, and a young, fun crowd. Afterward, the Swimsuit Afterparty (5 PM – 7 PM) at the bar is perfect for mingling. Stay late for live music (Johnny the 3rd, 6 PM – 9 PM) and DJ beats till 2 AM. Book the cruise ahead on their website—it’s a signature experience.
- Wednesday (April 16): Hit up Open Mic Night (typically 6 PM – 9 PM). It’s chill, locals show off their talent, and you can sip a Bloody Mary or draft beer while soaking in the laid-back vibe. Arrive around 5 PM during Happy Hour for cheaper drinks and a sunset view before the music starts.
- Friday (April 18): Go for the nightlife. Get there around 6 PM for Happy Hour and some food (those pork sliders or duck quesadillas are clutch), then stay as it turns into a dance party after 9 PM. The video DJs and diverse crowd make it a peak weekend kickoff—high energy but still welcoming.
- General Timing Tips:
- Early Afternoon (12 PM – 3 PM): Great for day drinking with a view. Quiet enough to relax, especially Monday–Thursday, and Happy Hour (Monday–Friday, 12 PM – 6 PM) keeps it affordable.
- Sunset (6 PM – 7 PM): Prime time for scenery and a mellow crowd. Perfect any day, but especially midweek (Tuesday–Thursday) if you want fewer people.
- Late Night (10 PM – 2 AM): Friday and Saturday are the busiest and most electric—ideal if you’re craving a party.
More from Jake:
“For a week-long trip, I’d aim for 2–3 visits to mix it up: Saturday for the catamaran and party scene, Wednesday for a chill night, and Friday for the full nightlife experience. Pace yourself—Waikiki’s got tons to explore (beach, hikes, food), but Hula’s is a must-hit spot that adapts to whatever mood you’re in. Enjoy your trip, dude!”
