The Byodo-In Temple, located in Oahu’s Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, is a serene replica of the 950-year-old Byodo-In Temple in Uji, Japan. Built in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Hawaii, the temple features breathtaking architecture and lush grounds set against the Ko’olau Mountains. The temple is non-practicing, meaning it welcomes visitors of all faiths to explore and appreciate its beauty and peaceful atmosphere.
A highlight of the Byodo-In Temple is the massive Amida Buddha statue, created by renowned Japanese sculptor Masuzo Inui and covered in gold lacquer. Visitors can also ring the large brass “bon-sho” (sacred bell), which is believed to cleanse the mind and bring good fortune. The grounds feature koi ponds, peacocks, and meditation pavilions, making it a truly immersive experience.
The Byodo-In Temple is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission costs are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $2 for children (cash only). This picturesque location has been used for weddings, memorials, and as a backdrop in television shows like Hawaii Five-O and Lost .
