According to DOT, 10 downtown Honolulu intersections have had safety camera systems since November 2022 and have been collecting data from before activation of the cameras to after.

Since the cameras have been activated, officials have seen a 69% reduction in major crashes at the intersections.

Starting Saturday, March 1, the following intersections will begin issuing speed warnings:

  • Vineyard Boulevard and Pālama Street
  • Vineyard Boulevard and Liliha Street
  • Vineyard Boulevard and Nu‘uanu Avenue
  • Pali Highway and Vineyard Boulevard
  • Pali Highway and North School Street
  • Likelike Highway and North School Street
  • Ward Avenue and South King Street
  • Kapi‘olani Boulevard and Kamake‘e Street
  • South Beretania Street and Pi‘ikoi Street
  • McCully Street and Algaroba Street

HDOT Director Ed Sniffen emphasized that statistics show nearly half of Hawaii’s traffic deaths over the past five years can be attributable to speed.

“We know through physics that the higher the collision speed, the more serious the injury. If motorists drive at appropriate speeds, we can reduce crashes and keep vulnerable users like pedestrians and bicyclists safe,” Sniffed added.

The issue warnings will be given through April 29.

Officials said citations may be sent to those seen running red lights and exceeding the speed limit by more than five miles per hour.
