HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Medical Examiner has identified the diver that was killed after jumping off of Spitting Cave into the ocean on Feb. 8 as 28-year-old Santiago Bourdieu.
The jump off of Spitting Cave is estimated to be between 50 and 60 feet into an open ocean notorious for its strong currents. Ocean Safety said nobody should be jumping at Spitting Cave due to the high levels of danger.
In the past five years, officials have responded to the site over 50 times for cliff jumping injuries, drownings and near drownings.
Officials were able to bring Bourdieu to the shore within minutes of arrival and provided the diver with lifesaving measures. He was then transported to an emergency room in critical condition.
At this time, officials have not yet released Bourdieu’s exact cause of death.
