KAKAAKO, Hawaii (KHON2) — State Senate lawmakers have deferred a measure that would allow residential development in a portion of Kakaʻako, leading to a group of community members to celebrate.
Current law prohibits development makai of Ala Moana Boulevard, with the now-deferred measure looking to change that. The measure was backed by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, which was given portions of the land back in 2012.
Community members against the development say the bill’s demise is a victory for Kakaʻako, but they say that the fight is only over for the time being.
“The bill got killed, so the goal of ours is to speak to our community, to thank our community, but at the same time, to also prepare for next year because you know they’re gonna come with another bill next year,” said Kala McShane of Friends of Kewalos.
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs says that it wanted to build two 400 foot residential condos, along with other buildings to address the housing crisis in the islands.
