HILO, Hawaii (KHON2) — Area I Criminal Investigation Section detectives identified the man shot to death in Hilo on the morning of Feb. 19 as 36-year-old Brandon Shane Kalani Castillias of Hilo.
On the morning of Feb. 21, an autopsy determined that the manner of Castillias’ death was a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
South Hilo patrol officers responded to the murder case shortly after 5 a.m. on Feb. 19, after a woman called police dispatch requesting aid after hearing a gunshot near her residence. Officers from the Big Island police and fire department arrived and located Castillias, who police say appeared lifeless, in the road in front of the woman’s residence.
Paramedics attempted to administer lifesaving measures, but were unsuccessful in resuscitating Castillias. He was the transferred to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead later that morning.
The investigators responded to the scene to continue their investigation, and classified it as a second-degree murder. Detectives are yet to identify a suspect or motive in this case.
