HONOLULU (KHON2) — After weeks of testimony and hours of evidence, the fate of Eric Thompson is now in the hands of the jury.
Prosecutors said the murder of Jon Tokuhara was a calculated act of revenge, while the defense argued it was all circumstantial.
Prosecutors painted a picture of a man who had control of everything — a successful business, a loving wife, a beautiful family — but saw it all unravel when he discovered an affair between Tokuhara and his wife.
“It was a targeted killing and again four shots to the face indicate that it was personal,” said Ben Rose, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney.
To prosecutors, the evidence is clear.
The surveillance footage of a truck similar to Thompson’s near the crime scene, the similarities between the man seen wearing the bucket hat and Thompson and Thompson’s DNA inside the same bucket hat, recovered at the scene.
The defense argued the prosecution’s case was built on assumptions rather than hard evidence and the investigation was flawed.
“Who then puts the hat and this glove inside a cellophane envelope? So tell me, is that not contamination?” questioned Nelson Goo, Defense Attorney.
The defense also attacked the idea that Thompson was a jealous, controlling husband consumed by anger.
“You see what the real effect of that post-nup is? Nothing. This is the reality of the situation.”
This is the second trial for Eric Thompson. The first ended with a hung jury and now it’s just a matter of time for the jury’s verdict in this trial.
