Hawai’i men’s volleyball sweeps UC Irvine again

Fresh off a three-set win to open Big West play Friday night, the No. 4 University of Hawai‘i men’s volleyball team returned to Simplifi Arena on Sunday, looking to complete a series sweep over No. 3 UC Irvine.

With 7,200 fans packing the arena, the Rainbow Warriors, dressed in all-black, delivered another dominant performance, taking down the Anteaters in straight sets (25-22, 25-19, 25-20).

Hawai‘i (15-1, 2-0 Big West) controlled all phases of the match, led by Kristian Titriyski’s 19 kills and Louis Sakanolo’s 12 kills. Eleu Choy anchored the back row with nine digs, but the defensive game-changer came at the net. The Rainbow Warriors put up nine blocks, with Kurt Nusterer contributing a team-high five to stifle the Anteaters’ attack.

Hawai‘i head coach Charlie Wade credited the electric crowd for fueling his team’s performance.

“How about this crowd coming out here on a Sunday?” Wade said. “I don’t know what the final number was, but it was an awesome, awesome environment. Our guys get fired up to play every night, and when a crowd like this comes out, it really is powerful. I think they had a lot to do with how well we played this weekend.”

“Thank you, guys. I’m not speechless very often, but I’m really grateful and humbled by the kind of support the community is showing us right now.”

With the series sweep secured, the Rainbow Warriors take a brief break from Big West play, hosting Lindenwood for a two-match series on Wednesday and Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
