(WHTM) — The Super Bowl is one of the most exciting events in the United States, and many are wondering how the cities are chosen for the game.
According to the NFL’s Vice President of Events Strategy Matt Shapiro in an interview with Axios, the process of choosing a city to host the Super Bowl is thorough and lengthy beginning years in advance.
Shapiro says the NFL analyzes “what might make sense for each year,” alongside the Fan Engagement and Major Events Advisory Committee to review potential cities. Recommendations are put up for a vote before NFL ownership and if an agreement is reached, the location is announced.
President of the Miami Super Bowl Host Committee Michael Zimmer coordinated the Super Bowl bids presented to the NFL for several years. In a CNN interview, Zimmer says the process of narrowing down potential cities changed from the cities bidding on hosting the event to the NFL contacting the cities asking for a proposal, which the owners either accept or reject.
“Now, [the NFL] no longer [does] the bidding model,” Zimmer said. “Now what they’re doing is going to a model where they will ask you if you would like to host the game, and if you accept, then you negotiate the terms.”
Shapiro says the weather, stadium quality, and the mix of hotels and nearby venues are the main factors for selecting a city, as well as how long it has been since they hosted a Super Bowl, local partnerships, and support.
“Super Bowl is not just Super Bowl Sunday,” Shapiro told Axios. “There’s a tremendous amount of events throughout the week.”
Super Bowl LIX will be held at the Ceasars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on Feb. 9, 2025.
Super Bowl LX will be held at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Feb. 8, 2026, and Super Bowl LXI will be held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on Feb. 14, 2027.
