As the University of Hawai‘i football team wraps up its final week of spring training camp, redshirt freshman quarterback Micah Alejado continues to develop into a leader under center.
Despite starting just one game last season, Alejado made a statement with a record-setting performance on Senior Night. Now, the former National Prep Player of the Year is embracing the responsibility that comes with his role—not just being protected, but also providing protection for his teammates.
“You just got to be a leader,” Alejado said. “The quarterback, you know, everybody is counting on you. So you can’t put them in bad situations—holding the ball when somebody is open or things like that. Protecting the O-line, getting the ball out quick, seeing something flash—that just gives them confidence when you get the ball out and they’re holding their block. Not letting the D-line get any touches is a big confidence booster. That’s how you protect them.
“The receivers, you put them in the right position. If it doesn’t look right, I’m not going to do it. I’m more of a ‘safe than sorry’ type of guy. I know there are risks I have to take, but I’m not going to put our guys in a position to get hurt or be in a bad spot.”
Head coach Timmy Chang, who set multiple NCAA passing records as UH’s quarterback from 2000-04, knows the importance of smart decision-making at the position. After hearing Alejado’s mindset, Chang pointed to his maturity as a key reason he’s earned the QB1 spot.
“He gets it. He understands,” Chang said. “And you want him to, right? It’s reciprocated. He’s getting protected by these guys, and they’re trying to keep him clean so he can do his job. But he knows he has to help them by getting the ball out quickly, distributing it on time, and not putting people in tough situations. That’s why he’s QB1.”
The Rainbow Warriors will conclude spring camp with Warrior Pau Hana on Sunday, March 9, from 4-6 p.m. at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex. Admission and parking are free, with gates opening at 3 p.m.
Fans can enjoy food trucks in the Diamond Head end zone and a beer garden on the sidelines. Following the event, players will be available for a 20-minute autograph session.
Instead of a traditional spring game, UH will hold one-on-one drills and 11-on-11 game scenarios. Fans who RSVP will be entered to win swag bags, promotional items, and other prizes by participating in on-field activities.
