The prosecution and defense made their final pleas to the jury on Thursday, Feb. 27 in the second phase of the trial.

Prosecutors argued that Thompson was a calculated killer with a gun collection of 12 firearms that were displayed before the jury and a danger to society.

“The manner in which he committed this offense alone is enough to convince you beyond a reasonable doubt that he is a danger to our community,” said Ben Rose, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney.

“He’s already demonstrated that he broke the law. He killed someone. He will do it again if he feels it’s necessary and he will possess firearms if he wants to,” Rose added.

The defense argued that Thompson’s character, upbringing and lack of criminal history showed he was not a danger to the community and accused the prosecution of fear mongering.

“They, of course, want to show the photograph of the decedent, parade all these firearms in front of you as a scare tactic. You heard the judge. You shouldn’t be influenced by this prejudice or passion,” Defense Attorney Nelson Goo argued back.

Deliberation stretched for nearly five hours and jurors were sent home for the day to continue discussion on Friday, Feb. 28.

While the criminal case against Eric Thompson may be coming to an end, the legal battle is far from over.

The Tokuhara family has filed a civil wrongful death lawsuit against both Thompson and his wife, Joyce.
